বিজয়া (Bijoya) literally means, a lady who is victorious, in Bengali language. Culturally, it is attributed to the final day (Vijaya Dashami) of battle where the goddess Durga defeats darkness with her devine light. The cultural heritage of Bengal revolves around this celebration and the people wait an entire year to see Ma Durga.
Lately this celebration has become more about exhibiting oneself… the significance of light defeating dark in the form of the mother Goddess, has become totally secondary. It might have been just any other celebration where selfie and flex culture takes over traditions, heritage and sobriety.
I’m just a guy to pick up the brush to paint what I see… the audience might disagree or agree, this is just my social satire on a medium I’m comfortable with.
In the end, this is a 14” x 28” mix media contemporary painting, with some impressionistic experimentation in the background.

This painting is totally apt. It’s refreshing to see you have the guts to tell the story as it is, instead of trying to be politically correct.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful and powerful as usual...a very apt depiction of the current overdose of narcissistic indulgence...and these days our phones 'own' us...they click our 'buttons' much before we click them...aar style, colour etc niye alada korey aar ki bolbo...oshadharon as always🙏🏼🙏🏼
ReplyDeletethe painting itself is vibrant and very lively and beautiful. But i felt disappointed by the portrayal of the modern woman in the bottom panel. a more positive take would have been likening a modern woman to the power of Durga.. as it is we face so many adversities and then to be blamed and sexualized feeds into a rhetoric that feels rather unfair… and negative .. it’s only part of the reality . next time maybe empower women with your amazing art …
